Little Bighorn river, Montana. That area on the other side of the river was where a huge encampment of Lakota, Cheyenne and some of their allies were arrayed. Custer was afraid the natives would get away so he jumped in to attack before Generals Terry and Gibbon's forces were there to back him up. Just a week before this, during the battle of the Rosebud, Crazy Horse led warriors who turned away General Crook and his men. General Crook was coming up to join Custer.
